Ok, I'm not one to typically get up in arms over someones opinion of a movie. But this case irritated me to no end. Roger Ebert, one of the most renowned movie critic of our time just stepped over the line. The movie - Fanboys. The reason I am up in arms is not because he panned the movie. I have not even seen the movie and have no idea if it is good or not. The reason I am upset is because basically he insulted me and many of my friends.
Now I am a Star Wars fan, some may even say geek (ok, I say geek too) and I collect as much as I possibly can and still be in good graces with my wife, but I am not a loser and I am not socially inept, but I do enjoy the franchise. This includes many other people who may not like Star Wars but have their own areas of fandom (i.e. Star Trek, Babylon 5, etc.).
To read Eberts exact review you can check it out here at his website rogerebert.suntimes.com, but I will highlight some of the quotes:
"Extreme fandom may serve as a security blanket for the socially inept, who use its extreme structure as a substitute for social skills. If you are Luke Skywalker and she is Princess Leia, you already know what to say to each other, which is so much safer than having to ad-lib it. Your fannish obsession is your beard. If you know absolutely all the trivia about your cubbyhole of pop culture, it saves you from having to know anything about anything else. That's why it's excruciatingly boring to talk to such people: They're always asking you questions they know the answer to."
"It is a celebration of an idiotic lifestyle, and I don't think it knows it."
Like I said I am insulted that my entire lifestyle has been degraded down to "idiotic". There is a rather good response to this article by Jimmy Mac from theforce.net also published on Ebert's Website kind of tearing him a "new one". So I say anyone who has ever considered themselves a fanboy or fangirl of any pop culture thing then they should promote a ban on Roger Ebert. I for one will no longer consider his opinion in any movie I watch. Thats for sure.
What a jerk!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait till the movie comes out. It has taken long enough.
Actually the movie already is out. It came out in 6 cities on Feb 6th I believe and then is expanding to 10 more cities on Feb 19th (again I believe). No SLC though so so far I'm screwed unless it expands even more. The closest to us is either Denver or Phoenix I think.
ReplyDeleteShit. That sucks. I hope they expand it. I had noticed we had not gotten it here yet. Maybe I shoudl just add it on Netflix already.
