And for some reason people get upset when you go through all the posters commenting on how bad they are.Jim L.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08680478888594299616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16289469.post-12427048083412089172009-10-30T11:19:48.507-06:002009-10-30T11:19:48.507-06:00Spot on, bro. As for posters, I find most of them hard to follow. We need a new model. I just can't read paragraphs of text on a wall when people are talking to me.Dr. Jerquehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15934444760785537721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16289469.post-69806853640126849662009-10-28T16:07:59.001-06:002009-10-28T16:07:59.001-06:00I think you're right, I just found it a little...I think you're right, I just found it a little frustrating at times!Silver Foxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03131032620978696727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16289469.post-83486493102693382962009-10-27T08:18:31.519-06:002009-10-27T08:18:31.519-06:00Fox, I understand what you are saying. The problem is that people don't take the time to make them look nice. They figure if they just have the info up there that is all that matters.

I added some more stuff into my do's and don't to incorporate the not reading the slides and not reciting your title.Jim L.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08680478888594299616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16289469.post-66498791307442731282009-10-27T03:07:42.047-06:002009-10-27T03:07:42.047-06:00I know I am guilty of too many words on a poster. ...I know I am guilty of too many words on a poster.

What I hate in talks - HATE HATE HATE - is having someone read their freaking slides to you. Don;t bother - just stand there and click though them - I can read and having you read them word for word to me just pisses me off more.ReBecca Hunt-Fosterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05531577104733601336noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16289469.post-46039950752579072182009-10-26T23:35:01.930-06:002009-10-26T23:35:01.930-06:00I understand that full posters (one-sheet printout...I understand that full posters (one-sheet printouts) are the rule these days, but I find almost all of them unreadable compared to the old style of posters - almost all have way too much information crammed together to entice me to stop and read. And all the small print - I'd have to stand there forever. I'd go back to the old style in a heart beat.Silver Foxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03131032620978696727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16289469.post-66443840205798059262009-10-26T12:39:39.539-06:002009-10-26T12:39:39.539-06:00"If I can't understand the gist within 20..."If I can't understand the gist within 20 seconds at 6' distance, I'm gone."

Yea that's how I feel about it as well. If the person didn't take the time to make it presentable and easy to understand, it is not worth my time to try and understand it.

I've probaby broken a few of the rules myself (I for one usually like bullets) but it's easier to see mistakes in other people's stuff than one's own.Jim L.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08680478888594299616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16289469.post-56563786507383109192009-10-26T12:33:36.359-06:002009-10-26T12:33:36.359-06:00My rule of thumb for talks is at least one photogr...My rule of thumb for talks is at least one photograph/graphic, per slide. No more than two graphs, or six bullet points (omit the bullet) on a slide (text for audience to follow is never smaller than 30 pt), and no more than 10 slides (12 with title and thank you) worth of presentation. Oh, and never, never, recite your title or any bullet point verbatim.

Cramming eight different climate proxies on a single full-size x/y graph, however: guilty as charged :)

With posters I try to have at least a 6 to 1 graphic:text ink ratio, title is always at least 2" tall, and text blocks are also at least in 30pt type. No more than two fonts (one sans-serif for titles and one serif font for blocks of text). If you need more room for text, cut something, or be prepared to talk visitors through it. If I can't understand the gist within 20 seconds at 6' distance, I'm gone.Matt Kuchtahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18168846490598155683noreply@blogger.com
