Also because you are in Salt Lake, and South of there is a lot of nice scenery, go do us 89 east of Kanab at about Paria crossing, and you can have a baseline of about 1/2 the classical length. Pick your point in Salt lake, and then use google earth to find a point at the same longitude on us 89. (That is on the road between Kanab and Lake Powell). The thinner the top of the shadow rod, the less diffuse the shadow will be.
